Time for the seasonal update I guess it's been a while. TL;DR: BotCon, werkwerk, I should have been a truck driver like my commercial art teacher suggested, and FUCK YEAH Diablo III <3
Or please continue if you would prefer the long version.
Went to Botcon last month with ~Xevious-girl and ~glacierSCIENCE and we all crashed at a friend's house in Dallas, had a great time. Got to hang out with =SilverPhantom, *ToonQueen, *bunnybot and *RottenDeadpan while up there, which was also awesome <3. Didn't see as many folks this year as last, I know a lot of people couldn't make it cause of the time change. Really wasn't happy with the way they handled registration and that crap with the fanworks chapped my hide to be frank. Not sure I'll be going next year, but who knows, I may be convinced.
Been really busy with work, ever since my boss took a new position last year I'm sort of a one-woman art shop at my job, and I can't help bringing it home a good deal. I think the stress, both mental and physical, from that along with some other elements in my life have really started me thinking about myself in terms of my art direction and how I want to grow as an artist.
Don't get me wrong, I'm aware fandom art is not considered Great Art as a genre by most (though damn, some folks around here sure as hell hit that like a jackhammer), but I've always conducted myself with a complete lack of srs bznss towards the fanarts I've done anyway. Even if that's really all I have the desire to produce after working on boring shit all day But yeah, no matter what you're drawing, at least you're drawing. And the experience changes you, evolves you even if unintended.
I guess I've been building a bukkit list, as it were, of things I want to change, or improve. Settling on some sort of unified coloring style, rectifying my complete inability to do simple representational roughs for portraiture, fixing my fail at some hand positions and almost any foot position XD My dislike of certain action poses, architecture, etc etc. There's a lot, needless to say. And I've been an artist long enough to recognize that when you don't want to do something, it's usually because you suck at it.
Anyway, sorry for yapping on, just feeling pretty philosophical about my arts lately. I have a long way to go before I please myself, and that's the person you're really responsible for ultimately, right? I've been sketching a lot when I find a few spare minutes, most of it's not up anywhere, but it's helping. Doodle or Die has also been a positive tool for me lately, it's always nice to get random quick challenges, and have the opportunity to draw shit you normally wouldn't even have thought of in such a casual setting and with limited resources (User name on there is Darke, for any interested in sketchy paint-style crap).
I'm still working on stuff I owe folks, but I don't think I'll take on any more for a while. That list was just sort of crushing me creatively, to be honest, and I've turned away the last few commissions because the thought of doing them like physically pained me lol. I'm sure I'll get over the funk, but you know how it is. When you'd rather lick hot asphalt than draw something, it shows.
But yeah, in other news. Diablo III came out a few days ago Had to drag my face out of it to go to work and ohholyshit so tired. Anyone else playing?
